The Proud Entry to Federal Hill! Step through the iconic archway and into the heart of Providence’s Little Italy. Located at the intersection of Atwells Avenue and Bradford Street, Giuseppi Garibaldi Park serves as the official welcome point to historic Federal Hill.
At the center of the park stands a prominent bust of Giuseppi Garibaldi, an Italian patriot and national hero known for his efforts in unifying Italy. The monument was originally unveiled in 1909 and moved to its current location in 1985, a proud reminder of the neighborhood’s deep Italian roots.
Above the gateway, the “La Pigna” (Pinecone) glistens—a traditional Italian symbol of welcome, abundance, and hospitality. Whether you’re arriving for dinner, a festival, or a quiet stroll, Garibaldi Park is your first step into a community rich in culture, flavor, and history.
St. John’s Park
Tucked along Atwells Avenue in the heart of Federal Hill, St John’s Park offers a quiet green space surrounded by the rhythm and charm of Providence’s Little Italy. Named after the former St. Johns Church which once stood nearby as a pillar of the community, the park continues to reflect the neighborhood’s strong cultural and historic roots.
The park features open grassy areas, trees, and benches perfect for a midday break or a peaceful moment in the shade. It serves as a casual gathering spot for locals, a resting place for those exploring the Avenue. At its center stands the Giovanni da Verrazzano monument, honoring the famed Italian explorer who was among the first Europeans to chart the Atlantic coast of North America. The Monument is a proud symbol of Italian- American heritage and focal point for the park’s historical identity. A commemorative plaque also honors the history of St. John’s Church and its significance to the local community.
